ECP.NL was founded in January 1998 with support of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Dutch employers Association to contribute to increasing the competitiveness of the Dutch business in the digital economy. There are approximately 150 participating parties within ECP.NL who form an independent public private co-operation that is the foundation of the activities -these are further supported by the Dutch Government.
The European Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics (ERCIM) is a European Economic Interest Grouping (EEIG). Through this unique structure, seventeen different research organisations in as many European countries are able to participate in joint projects. ERCIM has its central office located in France with expertise in all matters scientific having set up strong internal and external channels for solicitation and dissemination. As the European host for the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), ERCIM's particular interest in Quatro stems from a desire to match policy with technology, applying the Semantic Web techniques to a variety of situations that can take us nearer to the ultimate goal of a "web of trust."
The Internet Content Rating Association is a non-profit organisation that exists to protect children from potentially harmful material whilst preserving free speech on the internet. ICRA is supported by many of the leading internet industry players: AOL Europe, Bell Canada, BT Openworld, Cable & Wireless, The Internet Association of Japan, MadeSafe, Microsoft, the Parents Advisory Group for the Internet (Singapore), T-Online, Tiscali, Verizon and Yahoo!.
The Internet Quality Agency, IQUA, is a platform designed for global action and has as its founding members various independent regulatory authorities with functions connected with the Internet. IQUA is a service for companies, organisations and people so that they may publicly demonstrate that their activity on the Internet has a quality guarantee for the user.
NCSR "Demokritos" is the largest self-governing research organisation, under the supervision of the Greek Government. The Software and Knowledge Engineering Laboratory (SKEL) from its Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications will participate in Quatro. NCSR research results are used to empower its knowledge technologies towards the development of a platform for multimedia and multilingual content and knowledge management.
Pira International is a leading commercial consultancy business founded in 1930 that specialises in the packaging, paper, printing and publishing industries and has established a reputation as one of the key knowledge providers in these related industry sectors. Pira has an interest in XML and RDF developments and the use of metadata on the Web on behalf of its industries as there is potential for direct benefit to a number of key supply chain issues.
Università degli Studi di Milano (UNIMI) is one of largest Italian Universities, with a total of 60,000 students currently enrolled. UNIMI is located in the northern region of Italy; one of the most industrialized ones in Italy. Because of its location, UNIMI has strong connections with a large number of industrial companies. The Dipartimento di Informatica e Comunicazione (Department of Computer Science and Communication) of UNIMI consists of 40 full time faculty staff. The research activities within the framework of QUATRO will be carried out by the DB&Sec (Database and Security) group
Web Mèdica Acreditada (Medical Association of Barcelona) was established in 1999. This seal, created to serve as a virtual reference point of the medical community, seeks to establish a set of norms that the owners of medical and healthcare websites can voluntarily follow from Spain and Latin America to offer consumers good quality Internet health services. The WMA has established a process of certification applying its recommendations and guiding web sites to improve their quality. Up to now, the WMA has accredited more than 230 health websites in Spain and in Latin America.
